Window Glazing Cost: What to Expect

“Glazing” is one of those terms that gets used in a few different ways in the glass industry, so before we talk about cost, let’s make sure we’re on the same page about what glazing actually means.

What Does “Glazing” Mean?

In the broadest sense, glazing refers to the installation of glass into frames — windows, doors, storefronts, curtain walls. A “glazier” is a glass professional.

More specifically, window glazing often refers to the compound or putty that seals glass into a wood window frame. In older wood-frame single-pane windows, glazing compound holds the glass in place and provides a weathertight seal. Over time, this compound dries, cracks, and falls out — causing drafts, rattles, and water infiltration.

This guide covers both: the cost to re-glaze (replace the compound in) an existing window, and the cost of glazing as glass installation.

Re-Glazing an Existing Wood Window

Re-glazing a wood window means removing the old cracked glazing compound, re-securing the glass with new glazing points, and applying fresh glazing compound. This is common in older homes with original single-pane wood windows.

Typical cost range: $20–$80 per window for DIY (compound + tools). Professional re-glazing typically runs $50–$150 per window depending on size and condition.

Factors that affect cost:

  • Size of the window
  • Accessibility (ground floor vs. upper story)
  • Whether the glass also needs replacement
  • Extent of frame damage or rot

Re-glazing is a worthwhile investment in older wood windows — it extends their life significantly and dramatically improves weatherproofing.

Single-Pane Glass Replacement (Glazing)

Replacing a broken single-pane glass and glazing it into the frame:

Typical cost range: $75–$200 per pane, including glass and labor for most standard residential sizes. Larger or custom sizes will cost more.

Double-Pane (IGU) Replacement

Replacing a failed insulated glass unit in an existing window frame:

Typical cost range: $150–$400+ per unit, depending on size, glass type, and whether low-E or other coatings are required. Tempered IGUs cost more due to special-order fabrication.

Commercial Glazing

Commercial glazing — storefront glass, curtain walls, office partitions — is priced differently than residential work, typically on a per-project or per-opening basis. Costs vary significantly based on glass specification, size, and installation complexity.

Factors That Affect Glazing Costs

  • Glass type — Standard annealed glass is least expensive. Tempered, laminated, low-E, and specialty glass cost more.
  • Size — Larger panes cost more for both material and labor.
  • Location — Upper-story windows or difficult-to-access openings add to labor cost.
  • Frame condition — Damaged or rotted frames require additional work before glazing.
  • Number of windows — Volume often allows for better pricing per unit.
