Cracked Glass Repair in Clarksville, TN
A cracked window is more than an eyesore — it’s a security risk, an energy drain, and in the case of safety glass, a potential hazard. Whether your crack came from impact, thermal stress, or structural settlement, you have options. Here’s how to assess the damage and decide on the right fix.
Types of Glass Cracks
Not all cracks are the same, and the type tells you a lot about the cause and the best fix:
Impact crack — Radiates outward from a single point where something struck the glass. Usually caused by a rock, ball, or other object. Common in windows near driveways, playgrounds, or high-traffic areas.
Stress crack — Starts at the edge of the glass and runs across the pane without an obvious impact point. Often caused by rapid temperature changes (a window getting direct morning sun in winter) or by frame pressure. These can grow over time.
Pressure crack — Typically seen in double pane windows, often appearing as an hourglass or wave shape. Caused by extreme pressure changes or a manufacturing defect. Replacing the IGU is usually the only fix.
Edge crack — A crack that begins at the very edge of the glass, often where it meets the frame. Usually caused by improper installation or frame movement.
Can You Repair a Cracked Window?
For single-pane glass, small cracks (under 6 inches, not at the edge, not in the corners) can sometimes be stabilized with a clear resin repair kit. This stops the crack from spreading and is appropriate as a temporary measure while you wait for a full replacement.
However, repair resin is not a permanent fix for most residential windows. It won’t restore full strength, won’t be invisible, and won’t work at all on tempered or laminated glass.
For double pane windows, repair resin doesn’t work — the outer pane protects the inner, and once it’s cracked the seal is compromised regardless of surface repair.
When to Stop DIY and Call a Professional
Call a glass professional immediately if:
- The crack is in a door, shower enclosure, or tabletop — these typically use tempered or laminated safety glass, and cracks can lead to sudden shattering
- The crack spans the full width of the window pane
- The crack is at the corner of the glass (these spread fastest under thermal stress)
- You’re seeing condensation between panes along with the crack
- The glass is in a commercial storefront or high-traffic area
Temporary Emergency Measures
If you have a cracked window and can’t get a professional out immediately:
- Clear packing tape applied to both sides of the crack can slow spreading and keep out weather temporarily
- Plastic sheeting stapled or taped over the opening can provide a weather barrier
- Keep the area clear of children and pets until the glass is replaced
These are stopgaps only — not solutions.
