Window grids (also called muntins, grilles, or window dividers) are the dividing bars that create the appearance of multiple small panes in a window. They’re a popular design choice that gives homes a traditional or colonial look — but not all window grids are the same, and the differences matter when it comes to cleaning, repair, or replacement.

Types of Window Grids

Snap-In (Removable) Grids

Snap-in grids sit inside the window frame between the glass and the screen. They clip or snap into place and can be removed without any tools in most cases. This is the most common type of grid in modern double-pane windows — they give the appearance of true divided lights while keeping the window easy to clean.

Key feature: Removable for cleaning the full glass surface.

Grids Between the Glass (GBG)

Some double-pane windows have grids sandwiched between the two glass layers inside the sealed insulating unit. These grids can’t be removed without disassembling the entire IGU — which would compromise the seal.

Key feature: Permanently sealed inside the unit; cannot be removed. If they’re damaged or you want to change the look, the IGU itself must be replaced.

Simulated Divided Lights (SDL)

SDL grids are mounted on the exterior (and sometimes interior) surface of the glass. They’re glued or attached to the glass face rather than snapped into the frame. They look more like true divided lights than snap-in grids, but are more difficult to remove.

Key feature: Surface-mounted; not designed for routine removal.

True Divided Lights (TDL)

In older or custom windows, each “pane” is actually a separate piece of glass held in individual wood or metal frames. These are common in historic or craftsman-style homes.

Key feature: Each pane is real glass; repairs require replacing individual panes.

Why Remove Window Grids?

The most common reasons homeowners remove window grids:

  • Cleaning — Snap-in grids block access to the full glass surface for a streak-free clean
  • Appearance — Changing the look of the window from traditional to modern
  • Damage — A broken or discolored grid that needs replacing
  • Window repair — Grids must be removed before replacing the glass or IGU

Caring for Removable Grids

Snap-in grids are typically made of vinyl or painted wood. Over time they can:

  • Yellow or discolor (common with white vinyl grids in direct sun)
  • Warp slightly in extreme temperature swings
  • Accumulate dirt in the snap channels

Clean them with mild soap and water. For vinyl grids, avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch the surface. Replacement grids are available from most window manufacturers for common window lines.
