Window Grid Removal Tool: What You Need and How to Use It

Window grids (also called muntins or window dividers) come in several types, and which tool you need — or whether you need a tool at all — depends entirely on which type you have. Let’s sort out the options.

First: What Type of Grid Do You Have?

Type 1: Snap-in/removable interior grids These are plastic or wood grids that clip or snap onto the interior face of the glass. They look like divided-light windows but are actually a single large pane with a decorative grid attached. These are the most common in modern double-hung windows.

Type 2: Between-glass (internal) grids Metal or plastic grid bars floating inside the sealed IGU — between the two panes of glass. You cannot remove or access these without breaking the sealed unit.

Type 3: True divided lights (TDL) Actual individual small panes of glass separated by permanent wood or metal muntins. These do not come apart — the glass fits into the frame permanently.

Removing Snap-In/Removable Grids (Type 1)

These are the most common type in modern windows and don’t require special tools.

What you’ll need:

  • Your hands (or a flathead screwdriver as a last resort)
  • A mild cleaner and soft cloth for cleaning after removal

How to remove them:

  1. Locate the retention points. On most window brands, snap-in grids are held by small plastic clips at the top and bottom of each grid bar, or by spring-loaded retention at the ends of each grid section. Some grids press into small holes or slots in the sash frame.

  2. Apply gentle inward pressure. Most snap-in grids release by gently pressing the grid bar inward toward the glass. Run your fingers along the grid, pressing gently — you’ll feel the spring tension release.

  3. Pop out one section at a time. Start with the outer horizontal bar, then remove the vertical bars, then inner sections. The exact order depends on the grid design.

  4. Use the putty knife trick for stubborn grids. If a grid won’t pop free, wrap a thin flathead screwdriver or putty knife in painter’s tape (to protect the glass) and gently pry at the attachment point.

Reinstallation: Simply snap back in by pressing the clip/retention ends into the sash and pushing the grid bar against the glass until the clips engage.

Internal (Between-Glass) Grids: Cannot Be Removed

If your grids are sealed between the panes of a double-pane window, they are part of the IGU and cannot be removed or cleaned without destroying the sealed unit. The only way to remove them is to replace the IGU with one that doesn’t have grids.

If you have internal grids and the glass is fogged or cracked, when replacing the IGU you can choose a new unit with or without grids.

Cleaning Snap-In Grids After Removal

Once the grids are out, cleaning is straightforward:

  1. Rinse with warm water to remove dust
  2. Wipe with a solution of dish soap and warm water
  3. Rinse again and dry with a soft cloth
  4. Inspect for broken clip tabs (replacement grids are available from the window manufacturer by model)

The glass panes are now accessible for streak-free cleaning while the grids are off.

Special Cases: Grid Removal Tools

Some window brands sell proprietary grid removal tools — small plastic levers designed for their specific clip system. If your grids seem unusually difficult to remove, check the window manufacturer’s website or call them for the recommended method.

Andersen windows: Many use a push-tab snap system. A flat plastic pry tool (not metal) is recommended. Marvin windows: Similar snap-in systems with various proprietary clip designs. Pella windows: Between-glass grids that cannot be removed; also offer removable screen-mounted grids.
