How to Remove Grids from Double Pane Windows

Double-pane windows and window grids have a complicated relationship. Whether your grids can come out — and how — depends entirely on where the grids are located in your window. Here’s the breakdown.

Where Are Your Grids?

This is the first question to answer, because it determines everything else.

Option 1: Snap-In Grids (Inside the Room, Against the Glass)

Snap-in grids sit inside the window frame between the interior glass surface and the window screen. They clip into a channel in the sash and can be removed without tools.

These are fully removable. See our guide on how to remove window grids for cleaning for step-by-step instructions.

Option 2: Grids Between the Glass (Inside the IGU)

Some double-pane windows have grids that are sandwiched inside the sealed insulating glass unit (IGU) — literally between the two panes of glass. You can identify these by trying to touch the grid: if you can’t feel it from either the inside or outside of the window, it’s inside the unit.

These cannot be removed without destroying the IGU. The unit is hermetically sealed at the factory, and opening it would:

  • Break the seal and allow moisture in
  • Cause the glass to fog permanently
  • Require a full IGU replacement

If you want to change a “grids between glass” window to a clear look, the only option is to replace the IGU with a clear unit (no grids). This is a legitimate glazier service.

Option 3: Surface-Mounted SDL Grids (Exterior Face)

Simulated divided light (SDL) grids are mounted on the exterior surface of the glass. They’re typically adhered or held with clips and aren’t designed for routine removal, but they can be removed if you’re willing to potentially leave adhesive residue or clip marks on the glass.

Removing SDL grids changes the exterior appearance of the window significantly. If this is the look you’re going for, it can be done — but plan on cleaning the adhesive residue afterward with a glass-safe solvent.

How to Remove Snap-In Grids from Double-Pane Windows

If your grids are the snap-in type (most common in modern double-pane windows), here’s how:

1. Open the window sash — You need access to the interior side.

2. Examine the grid attachment — Look at the perimeter of the grid where it meets the sash frame. You should see the grids sitting in a shallow channel or clipped with small plastic tabs.

3. Start at a corner — Use a plastic putty knife or your fingernail to gently lift one corner of the grid away from the glass. Apply steady, gentle outward pressure — not a hard yank.

4. Release each snap — Work along the perimeter, releasing one snap point at a time. Most windows have clips every 12–18 inches.

5. Remove horizontal bars first — If your grid system has both horizontal and vertical sections, they interlock. Typically the horizontal pieces release first, then the vertical ones.

6. Clean and reinstall — Clean the glass and the grids separately, then snap everything back in by pressing firmly from the center outward until you hear each clip engage.

What If You Want to Permanently Remove the Grids?

Some homeowners simply don’t like the look of grids and want them gone. If your windows have snap-in grids, you can remove them and just leave them out — the window will function exactly the same without them. The snap channels may remain visible as small marks inside the frame, but the glass will be clear.

If you have grids between the glass and want a clear window, that’s a glass replacement job — the existing IGU is replaced with a clear unit.

Broken or Missing Grids on Double-Pane Windows

If a snap-in grid is broken, yellowed, or missing, replacement grids are available for most major window brands. A glass professional can often source matching replacement grids for common window lines.

If the grids inside your IGU are damaged or you can see debris between the panes alongside the grids, you likely also have a failed seal — and the whole unit needs replacement regardless.
